EQUIPMENT SAFETY TIPS

Tub Safety:

bullet Always use bath mats in your tub or shower because of  the threat of slippery surfaces.

 

bulletUse Transfer Benches when it is difficult to get in and out of a tub.

 

bulletIf you do not have a Transfer Bench, use a Bath Seat to transfer  in and out.

Always adjust the Bath Seat or Transfer Bench to fit the height of your tub.

Avoid using electrical appliances around the tub or shower.

 

bulletAvoid using throw rugs in the Bathroom.

Toilet Seats:

Must be mounted into a stud of  your wall.   Sheet Rock or Fiberglass Enclosures
will not support the weight of the grab bar and you.

Do not use Grab Bars on a fiberglass tub, as tub damage may result when clamping
down tight.

Toilet Seat Risers should be fastened securely to the bathroom toilet.

Walking Aids:

bullet When using crutches, 2-wheeled or 3-wheeled walkers,  avoid using throw rugs on your floors.

 

bulletAvoid positioning extension cords across walkways and entrances.

 

bulletMake sure your carpeting isn't loose.

 

bulletPosition furniture so that you have plenty of room to navigate with your walker or other aid.

bulletWheeled walkers can get away from you, so be extra careful with these.

 

bulletThree-wheeled walkers have brakes. Learn how to operate them properly.

Have Escape routes planned ahead. Consider the amount of extra time it will take to get out when you use a walking aid.

 

bulletUse Smoke Detectors in your home.

 

bulletUse Fire Extinquishers in your home and learn to use them properly.

 

bulletNever smoke when Oxygen Equipment is present in the house.

 

bulletNever smoke in bed. Do not smoke in Bed

 

bulletMake sure the outlets in your house are grounded before plugging in equipment such as concentrators, enteral pumps, alternating pressure pads and other equipment.IN00523A.gif (2655 bytes)
